Business Continuity in 2013

BCP man with hands over faceTake Action, Business Continuity Planning

Do you have a Business Continuity Plan in place?  After several major natural disasters in 2012 we are into another calendar year.  Most likely their will be more natural disasters as well as man made emergencies and disasters.  Will organizations and companies be ready?  Already a lot of complacency has set in after Super Storm Sandy and the need for comprehensive Business Continuity Planning.  Usually it is the same answer from the corporate office, will it make us a profit?  The answer the “YES” if you take the steps now to budget a little money to save the company potentially a lot of money down the road.  One hour of down time whether it is scheduled and especially if it is unscheduled (power outage) can cost even small companies several thousands of dollars per hour.  Just think it the outage lasted an entire day!  Business Continuity Plans (BCP) are inexpensive compared to the alternative, business shut down for an unknown period of time, costing the company thousands of dollars and possibly clients that rely on the company.  Clients usually end up going elsewhere.  We are currently completing a Business Continuity Plan for a local private company in our area, at lease they get it and the necessity of having a BCP in place.

Galena Property Services (GPS) has completed a four (4) month long project entitled Alternate Cars Facilities  for Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing facilities in the greater Reno/Sparks, Nevada region.  The project looked at small, medium and large facilities ranging from 10-15 beds up to 150 beds.  GPS toured each facility then wrote their plan based on their needs on where to relocate (Alternate Care Facility) during an emergency or disaster.  Plans delivered were hard copies as well as electronically so the facility if necessary can access their plan from any location.  A “Grab & Go” sheet with critical information for the facility was developed for each alternate care facility.

Alternate Care Sites

Galena Property Services is currently working on a grant contract from the Washoe County Health Department on Alternate Care Sites (ACS). Specifically it addresses the Skilled Health Care facilities on their options on where they may have to relocate during an emergency or disaster such as a wildfire, flood or possibly an earthquake. The Alternate Care Sites will have similar facilities and caretakers identified as the facilities that are vacated. This work is taking place in the Reno, Washoe County, Nevada region. When completed at the end of February 2012 the information will be located electronically and via hard copy for all the Alternate Care Sites identified in the contract. This document will also identify all transportation units that have agreed to participate in case of an emergency.
